Learning to Live in the Moment

It’s said that if you want to be truly happy, you need to live in the moment.

Clinging onto the past brings nothing but sadness and regret, while focusing on the future often causes anxiety and stress. Living in the moment on the other hand, is a more peaceful, calm place to be.

However, it’s not as easy as you might think to simply switch to a “living in the moment” mindset. Below you’ll discover some great tips you can follow to help you learn how to live in the moment.

Focus Your Mind on the Right Now

You may be surprised to learn that most of the time you’re focused on either the past or the present. You may not even realize you’re doing it.

For example, think about when you’re eating. Often, you eat without really thinking about it. Instead, you’re more focused on what you’re going to be doing afterwards or you’re reflecting on the day’s events. You’re not really enjoying the taste of the food or appreciating the moment.

Focusing the mind on the here and now does take practice. However, you can do it by fully immersing yourself into whatever it is you’re doing. If you are eating, pay attention to each mouthful. How does it taste and what textures can you feel? Doing these exercises helps to build up your focus in the present moment.

Remember, You Control Your Thoughts

One of the most powerful lessons you can learn in life is that you control your thoughts. Many of us aren’t aware of our thoughts, we just let them come and go as they please. The trouble is, often they can turn into negative thoughts, quickly causing us to spiral into a stressed or unhappy state.

Learning to control your thoughts can make a huge difference to your happiness. It can also ensure you live in the moment, rather than allowing your thoughts to take you to the past or future.

So, the next time your notice a negative thought entering your head, take control. Counteract it with a positive one. Over time, you’ll find it easier to control what you think and also identify thoughts in the present moment.

The above are the most common things which stop us from living in the present. Learning to control your thoughts and focusing the mind on the right now is extremely important to living in the moment. Remember, it will take time, but the more you practice it, the easier it will become. Take control and start living in the moment today.
